Choosing a nursery

Things to look for when choosing a nursery:

Choosing the right nursery can seem a daunting challenge, but it doesn’t need to be if you are prepared, know what to ask, and what to look out for.
Firstly establish what settings are in your local area. There are a number of websites that offer comprehensive lists such as Day Nurseries  or Net Mums or Brighton and Hove Family Information where you see all the local nurseries and other childcare provision in your area.

To shortlist the nurseries in your area consider the needs of yourself, your child, and what’s important to you and your family. Features such as, are the opening hours suited to your working patterns? Is the nursery easily accessible by foot, car and public transport? Are you looking for a setting near home, work or on route. Then  look at the fees, what do they include? How do they compare to those of other settings?  Are you looking for a specific feature for example a baby room, extra activities such as learning a different language, homemade meals prepared on site, full and part time sessions, to name but a few.

You can research into the settings – check out the OFSTED website for the nurseries  latest OFSTED report – and a good source of information is from other people who are or have been in your position so talk to friends/colleagues and parents about their experiences and knowledge.
Most importantly, make sure you visit every setting on your list, because at the end of the day it is the ‘feeling’ you get when  pulling up to the front door of the nursery and as you look around that will influence your final decision, what is right for one person isn’t always right for you.
